LAC is the world’s largest provider of ecosystem services, including natural processes for climate change mitigation, through its forests and watersheds. Maintaining, preserving, and enhancing these services will be critical to achieving global climate goals laid out in the Sustainable Development Goals and Paris Agreement on Climate Change. At the same time, the region’s food systems are vulnerable to the impacts of a changing climate. Recent extreme weather events such as violent storms and droughts have led to further increases in hunger, poverty, and forced migration in the region. The LAC Program works to develop policies and strategies for mitigation and adaptation to climate change in food systems.
Monitoring and analysis for informed decision making
The LAC team works closely with partners within IFPRI and across the region to provide actionable analysis on the relationship between food systems and climate change. This includes measuring the impacts of climate shocks on food production and security. We also utilize IFPRI’s state of the art modeling capabilities to assess future impacts of climate change and identify effective policy responses.
Comprehensive Action for Climate Change Initiative (CACCI)
In partnership with local and regional organizations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean, the Comprehensive Action for Climate Change Initiative (CACCI) will work with key stakeholders at country level to meet commitments under the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. It will support the design and implementation of policies and programmatic investments that support sustainable and inclusive growth and promote climate adaptation throughout partner country food systems. Overall, this initiative will create transformational policies, strengthen human capacity, and improve institutional infrastructure that drives progress in implementing mitigation and adaptation interventions towards a net zero carbon region that is food secure and resilient. More about the initiative and its potential impacts can be found on the program page.
